What is Initiative 71?
Initiative 71 was a D.C. voter-approved ballot that legalized the use of cannabis recreationally. Its short title was Legalization of Possession of Minimal Amounts of Marijuana for Personal Use Act of 201. This ballot was approved by over 60% of voters ( 64.87% to be exact.) - Yes, this is the group of heroes we spoke about in the intro.
Most people don't know this, but Initiative 71 had a predecessor, Initiative 59. Initiative 59 was a ballot passed in 1998 that approved medical marijuana. It granted those with severe illnesses to use medical marijuana with a physician's recommendation. Initiative 59 paved the way for Initiative 71.
Initiative 71 brought about the legalization of weed but under certain conditions. The most crucial condition being the age requirement. Initiative 71 states that you must be 21 years and above to acquire weed. Here are other rules set by the initiative;
You can only share and gift weed but not sell or buy
Individuals of age can possess up to two ounces of marijuana and grow up to three mature and three immature marijuana plants in their homes.
Using marijuana on federal property is forbidden. The federal government owns about 29% of D.C. land. These lands include parks and military zones. Avoid smoking weed in these places.
Individuals are allowed to transfer up to one ounce of marijuana plants to another person.
The law charges a fine for consuming marijuana in public.
Driving while high is prohibited and could result in a DUI.
