Find a DC Dispensary [Complete DC Weed Guide]

Updated: Mar 3

The use of cannabis for both recreational and medical purposes has been legalized in Washington DC. This has brought about the establishment of a lot of D.C. dispensaries and smoke shops - making weed accessible to almost every one of legal age in D.C. However, this transfer of weed across the District is managed by certain restrictions, laws, and requirements- and there are a lot of these.

Unfortunately, a lot of D.C. residents are not familiar with these laws and often end up in big trouble with the law. This guide will talk about the various D.C weed laws, how to find licensed dispensaries, and where to get legal weed in D.C.

Looking for a DC Dispensary?

One thing to note is that unlike other weed-friendly places in the U.S, there are no recreational dispensaries in Washington. Only medical dispensaries are allowed to operate in the nation's capital.

So what's the difference between medical marijuana and recreational marijuana? Well, one major difference would be how you acquire it. Medical marijuana requires that individuals possess a medical marijuana card before they can acquire weed. Medical marijuana cards help dispensaries identify your medical condition and confirm whether it can be treated with cannabis or not.

You can get a medical marijuana card from all 33 states with medical marijuana programs. It's usually a month's long process and costs around $100.

There are other legal ways to acquire weed in D.C. for individuals who aren't willing to wait that long for a medical marijuana card, smoke shops, for example! Smoke shops are alternatives to dispensaries and operate under the law. We will talk more about smoke shops later on in this article.

Is Weed Legal in DC?

If you're still wondering whether weed is legal in D.C., the answer is yes. You can use cannabis for both recreational and medical purposes.

Regarding the recreational use of cannabis in Washington, there are specific requirements that must be met.

These requirements were set up by D.C.'s Initiative 71 (I71). When getting recreational weed in D.C., all that matters is that you follow the laws set by I71. The following section will discuss I71 in detail, so stick around!

What is Initiative 71?

Initiative 71 is a D.C. initiative that legalized the recreational use of marijuana in the nation's capital. It was a voter-approved ballot (64% of voters) conducted in 2014 for the legalization of weed. However, the measure went into full effect on February 26, 2015.

One of the most important conditions initiative 71 sets is that you must be 21 years and acquire weed. Here are other rules set by the initiative:

  • You can only share and gift weed but not sell or buy

  • Individuals of age can possess up to two ounces of marijuana and grow up to three mature and three immature marijuana plants in their homes.

  • Using marijuana on federal property is forbidden. The federal government owns about 29% of D.C. land. These lands include parks and military zones. Avoid smoking weed in these places.

  • Individuals are allowed to transfer up to one ounce of marijuana plants to another person.

  • The law charges a fine for consuming marijuana in public.

Note: These rules were not created to discourage the use of weed but to make sure that weed isn't sold illegally in the District. Learn more about the DC Weed Laws.

So How do I get Weed in Washington DC?

You can get weed in D.C. from credible sources, such as I71 compliant smoke shops. As stated earlier, weed can be gotten for medical or recreational purposes. But remember, medical use requires you to possess a medical marijuana card. But for Initiative 71 stores like Hidden Gym, all you need is a 21+ state-issued ID so no need for a medical card.
